Summer 2017 ingenious.carleton.ca carleton.ca/engineering-design/ingenious Editor: Adam Landry As Carleton University continues its 75th anniversary celebration and looks towards the future, it’s important that we take a moment to step back and reflect upon our past. In this special expanded edition of Ingenious, we invite alumni, students, colleagues and friends to explore a visual history of the Faculty of Engineering and Design and the many people who have become an integral part of the Carleton story. Throughout our history, an astounding number of spectacular minds have called Carleton home. Today, the ingenuity of our undergraduate students continues to amaze, as seen this past March at the Faculty of Engineering and Design’s Innovation Expo, an annual weeklong event featuring a wide assortment of sensational fourth year engineering and design projects. Students from the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism are also making an impact, having recently completed a specialized studio with design firm DIALOG to help create an all-new “central park” for Toronto. Carleton’s campus has also undergone incredible transformation over the past 75 years, enabling both our student population and research output to grow in remarkable fashion. This year, our collaborative research capability will expand even further with the construction of Carleton’s all-new Institute for Advanced Research and Innovation in Smart Environments (ARISE), set to open in 2018. From emerging 5G wireless technologies and smart infrastructure, to sustainable engineering and heritage conservation, the Faculty of Engineering and Design continues to be at the cutting edge of research success. Our faculty members continue to be recognized for their innovation, with Professor Michel Nakhla having recently been awarded IEEE Canada’s A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal for his extensive contributions to the field of electrical engineering. In the previous edition of Ingenious, I was pleased to congratulate Dr. Rafik Goubran, longstanding former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design, on his November 2016 appointment as Vice-President (Research and International) for Carleton University in an acting capacity. At this time, I am delighted to share that, as of March 2017, professor Goubran has been fully appointed to his new position. Once again, I am confident that his efforts will help Carleton to continually expand its research and teaching capabilities and enable us to embark upon a journey that will extend another 75 years and beyond.
