Ingenious is online Rafik Goubran Appointed Acting Vice-President, Research and International for Carleton University On November 1st, longstanding Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design Rafik Goubran officially transitioned to the role of Acting Vice-President, Research and International for Carleton University. The Carleton community congratulates Dr. Goubran on his appointment and wishes him the best in his new role. Having joined Carleton in 1987 as an assistant professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Dr. Goubran would find great success as a member of the Faculty of Engineering and Design over a span of nearly thirty years. After rising to the rank of full professor, he would be appointed as chair of his department from 1997- 2000 and again from 2001-2006. In July 2006 he would assume the role of Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design and one year later he would officially be named as Dean, a position in which he would apply a strong vision for the future and help to expand the Faculty’s research and teaching capabilities. Dr. Goubran is a research scientist at the Bruyère Research Institute, with research interests that include digital signal processing and its applications in biomedical engineering and audio processing. He has led many research projects in the area of sensors and data analytics related to the design of smart homes for the independent living of seniors, patient monitoring using pressure-sensitive mats, vital sign monitoring and microphone arrays. With Dr. Goubran having transitioned into his new role, former Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, Fred Afagh has been appointed as Acting Dean for the Faculty of Engineering and Design. Professor Afagh originally joined Carleton in 1987 as a member of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and has been involved in teaching and research for over twenty-five years. Dr. Rafik A. Goubran, P.Eng, IEEE Fellow, FCAE served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design from 2007-2016.
