A public lecture, “European Union and Eurasian Economic Union: Is Cooperation Still Possible?” with Prof. Maria Lagutina, St. Petersburg State University (Russian Federation) and short-term visiting scholar in September with the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (EURUS).
Abstract: The lecture will analyze the current state of relations and prospects for cooperation between two regional integration projects – the European Union (EU) and the Russia’s most recent regional initiative, the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). In spite of current difficulties between Russia and the EU, there is an objective necessity to establish closer relations between two regional blocks, for historical, geographical, geopolitical, and geo-economic reasons. However, convergence between the two integration projects cannot, under current conditions, be realized within the traditional paradigm.
Biography: Dr. Lagutina is Associate Professor, Vice-head of World Politics Department at St. Petersburg State University. She was trained as a PhD in Political Science (2006, St. Petersburg State University, Russian Federation). Her current research interests are oriented towards Eurasian integration and its regional and global dimensions, including different issues and prospects of European Union and Eurasian Economic Union relationships.
