“A special mention for Sharon Hayes for making us re-think the importance of alterity and the complexity of the interplay between the personal and public.”

The acclaimed American artist Sharon Hayes is an attentive listener. She is attuned to present-day voices, with an ear to the reverberations of voices from the past. Her works take the form of various “speech acts” that address the intertwining of history, politics, love, and public speech. She explores such diverse topics as student activism of the 1960s and 1970s, the Patty Hearst kidnapping, and gender and sexual politics.
Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to meet Sharon Hayes! This is the first time her work is being presented in Ottawa. The artist talk is held in conjunction with Hayes’ CUAG exhibition, “Loudspeakers and Other Forms of Listening,” curated by Heather Anderson. The exhibition is an ambitious project that transforms CUAG’s mezzanine gallery like never before. It features video and audio installations, works on paper, and textiles made by Hayes over the last decade.
Sharon Hayes has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions extensively over the past fifteen years, including at the New Museum, Tate Modern, MoMA PS1, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Deutsche Guggenheim, Venice Biennale (2013) Documenta 12 (2007), the Istanbul Biennial (2009), the Yokohama Triennial (2008), the Guangzhou Triennial (2008), and PERFORMA05. She divides her time between Portland, Maine, and New York City, where she is an assistant professor in the School of Art at Cooper Union. She is represented by Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin.
