FYSM 1506 – Topics in the Study of Societies

Offered by Sociology and Anthropology. Does not count as a major requirement.

This seminar will explore  “popular” (al-sha’bi, in Arabic) culture in the Middle East and North African region through diverse media and genres, including television, film, advertising, music such as political hip-hop and the incorporation of Western music video replications, literature, magazines, art, blogs and internet websites All material will be in English or subtitled. Through course readings, lectures, discussions, presentations, and various written assignments students will critically examine the many ways popular culture  in the MENA has potentially had an impact on identity, changing norms, social movements, and diverse rebellions. Special attention will be paid to the role of social media and satellite TV, political hip-hop, regional soap operas which are foreign sourced and dubbed, the socialization industry (western franchised restaurants and nightclubs),  LGBTQ communities, gender, sexuality, religion, aesthetics and consumerism.

Prerequisite(s): normally restricted to students entering the first year of a B.A. or B.Cog.Sc. program.
Seminar three hours a week.
