As I complete my Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies, Combined Honours, with a Bachelor of Arts in Law, I have started to think of all the experiences that made my undergraduate degree special.

The first experience that comes to mind is that I could maximize my degree by taking on all available program elements to be able to study in-depth the fields to which I am drawn. This was important because by studying the fields of greatest interest to me, I was able to develop my skills as a researcher and as a writer in a meaningful way.

The highlight of my undergraduate degree drew together my skills as a researcher and a writer when I decided to take on the challenge of writing an Honours Research Essay, through the School of Communication and Journalism (SJC). My work, supervised by Dr. Josh Greenberg, titled “To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate:  Canadian Public Health Messaging Towards Vaccinating Youth Ages 12-17 Years Old Against Covid-19” was a special experience for me because it involved challenging myself to leave my comfort zone as a student and take on a major research work that I developed over the academic year. I was also received an award for the “Best Honours Research Essay” for 2022-23 in the School of Communication and Journalism.

Earlier this year, I also had the honour of attending an advocacy event for the Scholars at Risk organization in Washington, D.C., hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, through the LAWS 4901 and LAWS 4902: Tutorial in Law course. This was a unique and special experience: I was invited to participate in meetings with senior U.S. government officials and international organizations as well as network with academics and professionals from around the world.

As I reflect back on these experiences, I am happy that I took full advantage of my university experience, despite much of it being limited by the pandemic. I look forward to continuing my experiences at Carleton University through graduate school as I begin a master’s degree in international affairs with a specialization in diplomacy and foreign policy this fall.
