Terri graduated from the doctoral program in Forensic Psychology at Carleton University in the fall of 2017. Working with Dr. Shelley Brown, her Ph. D. thesis explored gender considerations in the assessment of risk of justice-involved youth. This research focused on identifying gender differences in risk and strength factors that exist for justice-involved girls and the validation of a risk assessment instrument that integrated both risk and strength factors.

Having been introduced to corrections research with the federal government during her undergraduate degree, Terri quickly pursued all opportunities to explore and seek out higher learning and develop an associated career path. Through her 20 years with the Public Service and academic opportunities at Carleton University, she has developed a passion for evidence-based research within the correctional context.

Currently, Terri works at the Correctional Service Canada managing a dynamic group of like-minded individuals with the Incident Investigations team, exploring systemic issues in Corrections. Outside of work, you can find Terri cheering on her boys at the hockey rink or on their outdoor adventures, and spending quality time with her husband.

Research: Through her academic and professional work over the years, Terri has developed a keen interest in understanding gender differences within the correctional context, including both strength and risk factors among justice-involved youth and federally sentenced adults. During her attendance and participation at various academic conferences, she was exposed to the great work being done in the area of human trafficking and is interested in becoming more involved this work.

Future Goals: Terri would be interested in pursuing further research and volunteer opportunities with organizations working to end human sex trafficking and provide the necessary support for victims.

Tips for Success in Graduate School: Seek guidance when you need it and find an accountability partner – do not go it alone! There are many highs and lows in graduate school, but it is an incredible ride when you cross that finish line.
