Jo-Anne received her Ph.D. in Psychology in 1988 from the University of Alberta. She began her teaching and research career at Carleton University that same year, and became a full professor in 1997. In 2006 she won a Carleton Research Award. With an extensive publication list, and speaking and book chapter invitations, Jo-Anne is an acknowledged expert in Mathematical Cognition.
Supervising and mentoring trainees is central to Jo-Anne’s research program. In 2004, she was awarded a National Capital Educators Award in 2004. In 2018 she was honoured to receive a Mentorship Award from WICS Canada (Women in Cognitive Science Canada).
Jo-Anne has been the Chair of the Department of Cognitive Science since 2009 and was the former Secretary of the Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (2017-2021).
Jo-Anne’s research is funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
