A key component of the Morrisseau Project is building a research database to study the secured works made by Morrisseau throughout his life, which are now found not only in museums and galleries but also in hundreds of private collections. Once launched, the searchable online database will make it possible for individuals to access the artist’s amazing career and find new ways of thinking about Morrisseau’s impact.

The Morrisseau Project database aims to:

  • Be a repository of secured Morrisseau artworks: about 3000 works that span his entire career, with a focus on the years from 1955-85
  • Highlight Anishinaabe cultural knowledges & Morrisseau’s own words
  • Be an interdisciplinary & holistic research tool that includes stories, letters, videos and other multi-media from throughout his life

Built on the platform Argus by Lucidea, our database brings together artworks with other aspects of Morrisseau’s life, like his letters, notes, drawings, writings, and videos to help audiences today appreciate how he used story as the basis of his works of art. Morrisseau’s works offer us teachings from the past that impact us today, while providing direction for our future.

The research database includes many types of archival materials by and about Morrisseau.
