Spending time in nature has always been Tara Russell’s favourite way to connect with friends and family, think through complicated issues, and find joy and Type 1 fun. It’s this connection with nature that drew her to work to protect it.
Tara graduated with a BScH in Biology from Queen’s University in 2013, before moving to Alberta. There, she found new challenges in environmental conservation. She’s now the Program Director with the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society Northern Alberta Chapter where she’s spent the last seven years working to advance the protection of Alberta’s public lands and waters.
Tara has led grassroots campaigns to protect important headwaters regions, and to prevent the removal of provincial parks. Through all this work, she’s also faced the challenges that come with funding environmental work, public policy advocacy and small nonprofit operations. These challenges, and her desire to be more effective in her conservation work, drew her to the MPNL program.
Tara lives in Treaty 6, in Edmonton, Alberta, with her husband and her cat. When she isn’t working, she’s out biking, skiing, spending time with friends or digging around in her community garden plot.
