Dr. Karen Lawford is an Anishinaabe midwife (enrolled member of the Lac Seul First Nation), a registered midwife
(Ontario), and is the first Indigenous midwife in Canada to obtain a doctoral degree. She’s a founding member of the
National Council of Indigenous Midwives and of the Global Council of Indigenous Midwives.

Her health systems research champions comprehensive, gender-inclusive sexual and reproductive health and care, which is
underpinned by Indigenous theories, methodologies and methods. She’s committed to advancing the Calls to Action (TRC), Calls to Justice (MMIWG), and the Recommendations of RCAP by influencing policy, program and systems change at all levels of
government.

Dr. Lawford is the 2020 Indspire Laureate in Health, and became a member of the Royal Society of Canada in 2021. She’s an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Midwifery Education Program) at McMaster University. She’s also a founder and Member of the Board for two nonprofits: Bringing Birth Home and Zaagidwin Ndaknaan: A Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Midwifery.
