Now more than ever, international researchers are collaborating on pressing issues to address societal and global challenges. With the arrival of international students in Canada and an increasing need for graduates to develop cultural competency, universities must adopt a global perspective in order to prepare students for success as global citizens.

The Strategic Integrated Plan (SIP) Task Force invites you to attend a guest  panel on the topic of internationalization.

Panelists

• Karen Dalkie is the Vice President, Development and Partnerships of Canadian Bureau for International Education, an organization that advances Canadian international education by creating and mobilizing expertise, knowledge, opportunity and leadership.
• Paul Davidson is the President of Universities Canada, a membership organization that provides university presidents with a unified voice for higher education, research and innovation.
• Greg Moran is the Executive Director of Academics Without Borders, an organization that helps developing countries improve their universities so they can train their own experts and conduct research to assist in their countries’ development.

This session is part of the SIP Speaker Series, which is being hosted by Carleton’s SIP Task Force to prompt us all to think strategically about significant topics related to Carleton’s Strategic Integrated Plan. A video recording of the session will be made available to the Carleton community.

Paul Davidson
President, Universities Canada

Paul Davidson has played leadership roles in government, the private sector and the voluntary sector for over 25 years.

He joined Universities Canada in May 2009 as President and CEO where he leads a dynamic team dedicated to advancing higher education, research and innovation for the benefit of Canadians. Mr. Davidson has been named both a “top lobbyist” in Ottawa and a “top foreign policy influencer.”

Prior to joining Universities Canada, Mr. Davidson was the executive director of World University Service of Canada (WUSC) a leading international development agency active on 70 campuses across Canada, and 17 countries  overseas.

Mr. Davidson also held senior positions in Canadian book publishing including five years as executive director of the Association of Canadian Publishers. In the early 1990s, Mr. Davidson led the Toronto office of a prominent government relations firm after having served as a political advisor to Ontario’s Leader of the Opposition, Treasurer and Deputy Premier.

Mr. Davidson holds an MA from Queen’s University where he studied southern African history, and a BA from Trent University, where he was in the first class of the Trent International Program.

Mr. Davidson is married to Elly Vandenberg, and they have three grown sons.

Karen Dalkie
Vice President, Development and Partnerships, Canadian Bureau for International Education

Karen Dalkie joined Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) in 1998 and over the past two decades she has spearheaded and implemented a variety of projects and initiatives across the globe. In addition to providing strategic-level oversight to CBIE’s implementation of projects funded by Global Affairs Canada as well as foreign clients, Karen is also responsible for developing new partnership and development initiatives for the organization with a range of international and Canadian partners across government, academia and civil society. She is also actively engaged in deepening CBIE’s relations with member institutions, particularly through leading CBIE’s International Collaboration mission series which provides unique opportunities for members to explore and pursue educational partnerships with countries across the world.

Karen has a strong command of French, Spanish, Russian and Ukrainian and has worked extensively across the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Karen received her MA in International Affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University and her BA in History and Russian from the University of Manitoba. She also studied in Moscow at the Moscow State Pedagogical University and holds a Teaching English Language Certificate from Carleton University.

Greg Moran
Executive Director, Academics Without Borders

Greg became Executive Director of Academics Without Borders in October 2017 after serving on the Board of Directors for the previous two years.

Immediately prior to taking on the executive director role, Greg was the Director, Special Projects at the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario for two years. Greg served as Provost and Chief Academic Officer of Aga Khan University (AKU) from 2011-2015 and was based in Nairobi, Kenya, for three of those years. AKU is an international institution of higher learning operating in eight countries on three continents, with campuses in Pakistan, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, England, and Afghanistan. He is Professor Emeritus and Provost Emeritus at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, where he held an appointment from 1977 through 2015.
