Explore the History of Dominion-Chalmers

Guides: Moira Power & Carson McLaren (Carleton University)

Dominion-Chalmers United Church was purchased by Carleton University in 2018 and is home to an active congregation. The building was substantially rebuilt and expanded after a major fire in 1955. Its congregation was formed in 1962 through a merger of two independent Methodist and Presbyterian churches. Developed and led by undergraduate students at Carleton University, this tour will highlight the church’s importance to different community groups and organizations during the postwar, through their connection to various spaces inside the building.

Participants will learn about the church’s role in supporting women’s organizations, including the United Church Women and Ottawa Ladies College, and in providing a venue for Ottawa’s local and international music scene.
