The generous support of the Migration and Diaspora Studies (MDS) fund allowed to convene the first-ever Somali Studies colloquium in Canada on Saturday, October 14th, 2017, “Somali Studies in Canada: Resistance and Resilience.” This day-long, multidisciplinary conference featured an array of scholars exploring the growing and flourishing presence of Somalis in Canada and other countries outside of the Somali territories. This historic occasion also allowed Somali academics and others interested in Somali Studies to gather and discuss their work.   Based on the discussion at this event, the topic for the next Somali study in 2019 was selected.

The second “Somali Studies in Canada” colloquium took place on Saturday, October 19th, 2019, again at Carleton University. Following the previous process, this day-long event also featured interdisciplinary presentations from emerging Somali scholars in Canada presenting their work on intersecting topics such as migration, identity, belonging, access to education, health, criminal justice, and the future of Somali studies in Canada.

The third “Somali Studies in Canada” colloquium was held online on October 16, 2021!
