Indigenous Cultural Awareness Workshop
This workshop will help participants to understand the work that the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement is doing to support Indigenous students, staff, and faculty on campus. The workshop will include an overview of the historical context, which has impacted contemporary relationships between Indigenous Peoples and academic institutions. Participants will also learn to effectively integrate strategies for communication and relationship building skills with Indigenous students, and where they can direct Indigenous students to proper resources to better support Indigenous individuals on campus.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, staff and faculty will:
- Be informed about the services offered by The Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement
- Learn about historic relationships between educational institutions and Indigenous communities
- Better understand the experiences of Indigenous students at Carleton
- Learn about the proper terminology to use when referring to Indigenous Peoples and communities
What to expect at the session
Session length: 1.5 hour
This workshop may include the following activities:
- Smudging
- Periods of sitting
- Listening to a facilitator
- Discussion and interaction with colleagues
- Viewing a multimedia presentation
