Welcome!
Placement, Preservation and Perseverance (PPP) Project is a research initiative which aims to provide support to displaced Afghan scholars, civil society actors, activists, and journalists who have sought refuge in Canada. We are a group of academic scholars and activists committed to academic freedom and solidarity. Our main goals are to ensure the safety and integration of newly-arrived Afghan scholars and activists within the academic community and preserve their valuable local knowledge while creating intergenerational connections.
The focus of the project lies in supporting Afghan at-risk scholars, activists, and journalists who have been forced to flee Afghanistan due to the ongoing crisis, with special attention given to vulnerable groups, such as women and ethnic minorities. Additionally, we aim to empower their integration into their new homes and scholarly and civil society communities.
The project hopes to create opportunities for future knowledge networks in the Afghan scholarly diaspora. Furthermore, we aim to extend its impact beyond the challenges faced by Afghan individuals as we seek to investigate and assess how Canadian higher education institutions can be better prepared and more responsive to receiving and supporting at-risk scholars, activists, and students in times of crises in various countries worldwide.
Placement, Preservation and Perseverance (PPP) is a joint collaboration between Carleton University and the University of British Columbia. We are generously funded by the IDRC (International Development Research Centre), Canada along with contributions from CU and UBC.
The project officially began in March of 2022 and is expected to end in September of 2024.
