Introduction and Research Interests
Using an interdisciplinary modeling framework, my research integrates energy system and air pollution modeling. The objective is to support a more coordinated policy approach that addresses climate change and air pollution simultaneously, rather than as separate challenges. A central contribution of my work is examining how the long-term decarbonization pathways of the Canadian energy system change when the social costs of air pollution are explicitly consideredĀ alongside economic costs. By embedding air pollution social costs into energy system optimization models, my research identifies decarbonization strategies that deliver optimal societal benefits with respect to public health. This integrated perspective also reveals how decarbonization policies can be designed to provide larger health benefits for disadvantaged communities. In addition, I assess the spatially resolved air quality health impacts of emerging energy technologies to help identify the optimal siting for such techs across Canada from a public health perspective.
