Biography

As Carleton’s Vice-President (Research & International) since 2017, Rafik Goubran leads the university’s efforts to promote research excellence, foster global partnerships and develop knowledge with long-term, real-world impacts. A Chancellor’s Professor in systems and computer engineering at Carleton, Goubran is an international expert in audio signal processing currently collaborating with researchers across medicine, nursing, psychology and physiotherapy to design smart environments for the independent living of seniors.

Goubran is a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, in addition to being a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario and an affiliate investigator with the Bruyère Research Institute. He has, to date, co-supervised 97 graduate students, co-authored over 325 peer-reviewed publications and 10 patents, and attracted over $2 million in external research funding.
