Inaugural Conference: “Beginnings”

Canadian Association for the Study of Islam and Muslims / L’Association canadienne pour l’étude de l’islam et des musulmans et musulmanes

The Canadian Association for the Study of Islam and Muslims/L’Association canadienne pour l’étude de l’islam et des musulmans et musulmanes invites scholars to submit paper proposals for its inaugural conference, to be held at McMaster University in Hamilton on Thursday, May 26 – Friday, May 27, 2022. This conference will formally launch our new national scholarly network, which will initially be housed at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Islamic Studies.

Our inaugural conference theme is “Beginnings”. It is a theme that pertains to textual and philological as well as anthropological and historical approaches to the study of Islam and Muslims. Beginnings may be socially and historically situated; they may shed light on the origins of a narrative or genre; they may be unique to a single biography or describe a group; they may refer to methodological innovations and discursive shifts. By focusing on “Beginnings”, we seek to foster discussions across disciplines. We also attempt to push scholars to think about future directions of Islamic/Muslim studies in Canada.

CASIM accepts papers and pre-arranged panels on Islam and/or Muslims from all geographical locations, time-periods, and methodological approaches. Relevant disciplines include but are not limited to Anthropology, Religious Studies, Gender Studies, History, Critical Race Studies, Political Science, and Sociology. We encourage the submission of papers that examine historically marginalized communities of study, including Black Muslims, Indigenous Muslims, or Muslim/Indigenous relations.

An online participation option will be facilitated; details will be announced closer to the conference date. If you wish to be considered for a graduate student stipend to partially cover travel and lodging, please make it known when submitting your abstract at the link below.

Abstracts should be 350-500 words long (excluding references). Participants should prepare 15-20 minute presentations. The deadline for submission is December 10, 2021. To send your abstract, please apply online at : https://casim.ca/call-for-papers/
