Welcome to the Energy Sector Task Force

Welcome to the Energy Sector Task Force. NC-CIPSeR is spearheading a collaborative initiative focused on strengthening the critical infrastructure protection, security, and resilience of Canada’s diverse energy landscape.

The energy sector in Canada is a complex ecosystem comprising various components, including nuclear, oil, gas, water, renewable sources like wind turbines, and auxiliary infrastructure such as generators fueled by diesel and distribution centers. This intricate network of assets and systems underscores the sector’s significance to national security and economic stability. Moreover, the interdependencies within the energy sector further amplify its complexity, as disruptions in one segment can have cascading effects across the entire infrastructure.

The Task Force’s missionis to comprehensively assess the sector, uncover vulnerabilities, and develop actionable strategies to mitigate risks and strengthen long-term resilience. By bringing together stakeholders from academia, government, and industry, we aim to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and safeguard Canada’s energy infrastructure for future generations.

Key Focus Areas

  1. Research: We are conducting comprehensive research into emerging and current challenges facing the energy sector. Through Project Canvas, we are identifying the most pressing threats to the sector, enabling us to align future research needs with risk mitigation strategies.
  2. Innovation: Innovation is central to our strategy. We explore novel technologies and frameworks to reinforce the security and resilience of critical energy infrastructures. Our research initiatives seek to promote the adoption of cutting-edge solutions that enhance protection against evolving threats.
  3. Collaboration: Collaboration is the foundation of our approach. By fostering cross-sector partnerships between academia, government, and industry, the Energy Sector Task Force ensures that diverse perspectives and expertise contribute to solving complex challenges. Together, we are redefining how Canada explores and addresses critical infrastructure risks.
  4. Education: Knowledge sharing is key to building capacity across the sector. Through publications like the Pulse and Praxis Journal, training programs, and practical playbooks, we will disseminate best practices and insights to empower stakeholders. Our goal is to create a well-informed community capable of addressing energy sector vulnerabilities effectively.

BILL C-26: A New Frontier for Critical Infrastructure Protection

BILL C-26 marks a pivotal moment for critical infrastructure protection in Canada, particularly within the energy sector. This newly introduced legislation is designed to modernize and strengthen the frameworks that protect essential services and infrastructures, ensuring resilience against evolving threats.

At the Energy Sector Task Force, we view BILL C-26 as both a challenge and a significant opportunity. Its broad scope opens new pathways for collaboration, research, and innovation. With this legislation as a foundation, we aim to explore fresh ideas and develop cutting-edge strategies to safeguard the energy sector. By incorporating Project Canvas, we are actively engaging with BILL C-26’s mandates to identify and assess the most critical threats facing Canada’s energy infrastructure. This initiative offers countless opportunities for stakeholders to collaborate on research projects, technological advancements, and policy development. Whether addressing cybersecurity risks, physical threats, or cascading failures, BILL C-26 provides a robust platform for innovation.

As we navigate this new regulatory landscape, we invite partners from across academia, government, and industry to join us in exploring the full potential of BILL C-26. Together, we can shape a more secure and resilient energy infrastructure for Canada’s future.
