It is with great pride and joy that the Department of Cognitive Science congratulates our two University Medal winners (for Cognitive Science) in the June 2023 Convocation.
Congratulations to both Iain Burge and Kyle Grant.
In their own words:
Iain Burge: Bachelor of Cognitive Science Honours
With High Distinction
Cognitive Science Concentration in Cognition and Computation: Minor in Mathematics
The journey leading up to graduation has been a transformative and remarkable experience for me. At times challenging,
I have learned so much and grown as a person. I’ve had the privilege of learning from some influential faculty members; Professor Michel Barbeau and Professor Joaquin Garcia-Alfaro who advised me, Professor Yuly Billig who introduced me to quantum computing, Professor Brandon Fodden who introduced me to mathematics, and Doctor Mark MacLeod who introduced me to academia.
Come September, I hope to start my PhD in Paris where I will continue my research in quantum explainable AI.
Kyle Grant: Bachelor of Cognitive Science Honours
With High Distinction
Cognitive Science Concentration in Cognition and Psychology
I graduated high school unsure of my future direction. The Cognitive Science program at Carleton stood out because it exposed me to several interesting and challenging fields.
I started with a concentration in computer science, and I easily switched to a concentration in psychology. This flexibility provided a fulfilling experience and eased any anxiety I had about my future. After graduation I will continue to apply my knowledge of human behaviour and cognition as a User Experience Researcher with Coinbase.
Special thanks to Dr. Kasia Muldner, my thesis supervisor, Dr. Nadiya Slobodenyuk, who taught many excellent courses and supervised my FASS summer research project, and Dr. Roxana-Maria Barbu, who supervised my independent studies and allowed me to pursue my interests in industry work.
Again, the entire Department of Cognitive Science (Faculty and Staff) wishes the best to both of these amazingly talented students.
We live in unique times and both of these graduates have the opportunity to utilize recent and forthcoming technology.
