Title: Early Math Assessment – Step 1 of a Comprehensive Math Program
Location: DT – 2203

Meeting ID: 941 2403 2155
Speaker: Dr. Heather Douglas
Abstract:
The Early Math Assessment at School (EMA@School) is a battery of math tasks designed to capture students’ foundational knowledge of number. Using the EMA@School, educators can identify students who need extra support and intervene accordingly. Over 30 000 Alberta students completed the tests last year and the numbers are growing. In this talk, I will discuss how the tests were designed and validated and the ongoing work to improve and extend the EMA. I will finish by introducing The Assessment and Intervention in Mathematics (AIM) collective, a SSHRC-funded partnership whose mission is to create and curate mathematics assessment and instructional strategies that support all children in reaching their full potential.
Bio:
Heather Douglas is an adjunct research professor and post doc in the department of Cognitive Science at Carleton University. She came to research after a career teaching elementary school. As an educator and cognitive scientist, she is interested in mathematical cognition and how children learn. Her research focuses on applying both quantitative and qualitative methods to better understand individual differences in mathematical skills. Specific areas of her research include math affect, links between language and math, home numeracy, and assessments interventions for improved math learning. A key goal of Heather’s is to bridge the gap between research and practice through meaningful knowledge mobilization.
In this colloquium, Heather will talk about developing and testing the Early Math Assessment numeracy screener (EMA@School) and she will discuss a new and exciting initiative, the Assessment and Intervention in Mathematics (AIM) collective.
