What a weird world we’re living in right now. As I type out this blog post, I look out my kitchen window and all looks normal. There are birds visiting the bird feeders, squirrels playing around in the backyard and the sun is shining through. The only catch, there’s no one outside.

Growing up beside a public park, I’m used to seeing dogs and children running around freely. For the last week or so, that has not been the case. There are still the occasional dog walker or family out for a stroll, but everyone is keeping their distance. We’re all practicing social distancing and being diligent as to not pass on or receive any unwanted germs from our neighbours.

I remind myself of less troubling times, when you would walk along the Rideau Canal and see others out for a pleasant stroll (see attached photo). Now when I go for my canal jogs, everyone is keeping a safe distance apart from others passing by. We’re all trying to keep our minds at bay, but are also fearful for the unknown.

Nonetheless, if I’m learning anything through this unpredictable time, it’s that we must band together. We must stay grounded in our positive thoughts, keep reaching out to our friends and family and to be kind to ourselves and those around us. If you’re someone who regularly writes in a journal or takes to colouring in their adult colouring book at random points of the week, keep it up! Having these small tasks to complete in the day may help you develop a routine and keep your mind and body at peace while we navigate these unchartered waters.

Stay happy and healthy :-)
