Paul Simms is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Simms works in areas related to natural resource development and is involved in projects facilitating the restoration of disturbed land following mine closures. Resource development is an important activity to many Indigenous communities. Simms has represented Indigenous community interests as a technical adviser on mine site restoration projects.
“Resource development can be a force for good and a force for bad for many communities, including Indigenous communities,” he says. “One of the most important challenges facing Canadians is how to make resource development a sustainable force for good.
“I would like to better understand and, if I can, help overcome barriers to increased participation of Indigenous students in engineering.”
