PANL 5001 – Foundations of Philanthropy
This required course in the Master or Diploma of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership (MPNL or DPNL) program is intended to provide students with an understanding of the theories, motivations, values and ethics, and history of philanthropy and civil society, and provide a critical examination and practical application of its role in relation to government, business and society. It includes trends, debates and emerging challenges in philanthropy and voluntary action over time and in different cultures and regions, with some consideration of Canada. Case studies, simulations, role playing and other pedagogy suitable to adult learners is an important component of the course. Professional experience in the nonprofit, charitable and philanthropic sector could be a valuable asset. The students are a diverse mix of experienced and aspiring professionals enrolled in the Master or Diploma of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership program, the only degree of its kind in Canada.
The instructor must be able to teach in person and in an intensive, executive-style format over a two-week period (half days from 8:30-12:00 p.m. in week 1, and 1:30-4:30 p.m. in week 2) from June 16 to June 27, 2025, on the Carleton University campus. The online component of the course spans the full summer term, from early-May to mid-August. Through the online format, the instructor will facilitate student preparation for the two-week Summer Institute, timely completion of readings and assignments, and student engagement in online discussion forums. The syllabus should be ready by mid-April (copies of the syllabus from previous years are available); the instructor should be prepared to have some online contact with students from this time to course delivery and from course delivery until final assignments are due and evaluated in later August. This course should have approximately 30 students and doesn’t have a teaching assistant.
