Students who are in graduate and upper-year seminar classes in the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies with Prof. Kahente Horn-Miller are required to complete intensive projects using the Carleton University online portfolio platform called CUPortfolio.

Students learn about ethical and respectful research with Indigenous peoples by completing the web-based online tutorial. They also gain skills in library research, preparing and conducting interviews, critical engagement with issues discussed in the course, writing and publishing, proper citations of articles and media content, and how to translate online content into a format understood by a wider audience.

Students use Twitter feeds, YouTube videos, podcasts and pictures researched online to support what they learn. As they engage with content, readings and guest speakers from the course in their portfolios, it becomes a multi-modality learning experience.

Podcasts, YouTube videos, written work, timelines, and Prezi presentations are also prepared by students and embedded into projects. These formats serve in communicating researched content in alternative ways.

An important aspect of this assignment is group work and learning about the importance of community. Students are encouraged to support one another and the other groups through sharing their skills in using different online applications.

Students also learn the important skill of building consensus as they decide in their groups about the subject and content of portfolios.
