A NEW STORY IN THE MINDS OF OUR CHILDREN

Inherent Rights Youth Initiative

First Nations Youth are invited to take part in the Inherent Rights Youth Initiative (IRYI). IRYI is a joint project led by the Centre for First Nations Governance (CFNG) to accelerate nation rebuilding by investing in young people and providing opportunities to develop their leadership capabilities.

This initiative helps youth explore cultural identity and enables them to ground their understanding of the inherent right to self-government through language, art, history, and the land. IRYI is about advancing good governance, language, culture and effective leadership. It is about reclaiming what inherently belongs to the youth and bringing together Youth and Elders to develop a new generation of inherent rights leaders.

Following a successful series of events in 2021, this year’s initiative will be focused on creating a new memory in the minds of our children and youth. Youth will envision the new stories that will be told with the resurgence of traditional governance systems, practices and inherent rights leadership. Building on traditional stories from Elders across the country, this year’s Inherent Rights Youth Initiative will support a diverse group of First Nations youth from across Turtle Island in an online learning space where we will virtually visit five of the communities that have been partnered with the Rebuilding First Nations Governance research project to hear stories around the Centre for First Nations Governance’s (CFNG) five pillars of effective governance.

The CFNG has committed to convening a space for emerging youth leaders on an annual basis. It is our hope that our group of youth will continue to journey with us as we build a movement for change across Turtle Island and join us in welcoming new youth to the initiative this year.

Our journey begins with a series of virtual Storytelling Sessions and will wrap-up with a one-day Youth & Elder Gathering.
