Jean Hein
Shad Program Director at Guleph University 2025
Jean holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Waterloo in Chemistry and a Master’s in Education focused on Educational Research from Rutgers University, NJ. Her graduate work specialized in Educational Statistics and Measurement.
With five years of teaching experience in high school chemistry, mathematics, and science in both Ontario and Mexico, she brought this insight and knowledge to her work as the editor of Chem 13 News, a magazine for chemistry teachers. She has spearheaded international collaboration projects, such as the Periodic Table Project and Timeline of Elements. These artwork and chemistry projects had student participation from over 25 countries and all Canadian Provinces. She chaired ChemEd 2013 and ChemEd 2023, the largest conferences for high school and introductory chemistry educators in North America, each hosting approximately 500 educators over five days.
Currently, as the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences outreach manager at the University of Guelph, Jean is dedicated to STEAM outreach, empowering women and gender-diverse individuals, and collaborating with Creative Encounters (an Actua Network Member) to provide year-long STEM programming.
Being a mother to three young adults aged 20 and above, she finds joy in interacting with youth. They never fail to surprise her and bring her energy. In her free time, she enjoys being challenged by puzzles, growing plants, and dabbling in art. Inspired by her son’s rewarding experience as a Shad Alumni, Jean eagerly anticipates engaging future Shads.
