The Transgender Media Portal (TMP) is a website and database that aims to make audiovisual work by trans, Two Spirit, nonbinary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people more available to artists, activists, researchers, instructors, and the public. In this position, you would help Carleton professor Laura Horak (Film Studies) and her research team build the TMP and investigate trans cinema history.

Possible Responsibilities:

  • Help design, implement, and test the Transgender Media Portal in collaboration with the project’s development team
  • Collaborate with the UX designer and developers to create visually appealing and user-friendly web interface
  • Write clean, efficient, and maintainable CSS code to design spec
  • Optimize web pages for maximum speed and scalability
  • Ensure cross-browser compatibility and responsiveness of web pages
  • Test and debug web pages to ensure that they are error-free
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of documentation and codecase

Previous skills and experience:

  • Strong understanding of semantic CSS, HTML, and JavaScript
  • Ability to write clean, efficient and production-ready code without the aid of a front-end framework such as Bootstrap or Foundation
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git
  • Familiarity with user experience and user interface (UX/UI) design and graphic design
  • Experience with open-source frameworks such as Project Endings
  • Knowledge of cross-browser compatibility issues and ways to work around them
  • Clear communication, good time management, organized, independent worker
  • Previous experience with trans art and activism a plus
