Boyan Zhou finished his Aerospace Engineering undergraduate study at Carleton University in 2021. He is a flight enthusiast and in his spare time he enjoys aviation photography at airshows or plane spotting around airports. He also obtained the solo-skydiving licence last year and is currnetly working on his skydiving A-licence. In the future, he plans to do wingsuit flying and get a private pilot licence.
During Boyan’s undergraduate study, he completed a four-month co-op work placement at a pilot school where he learned about Canadian aviation regulations, collaborated with many pilots, and become familiar with many classic aircraft such as the Cessna 172, Piper PA-38, and PA-31. During his Capstone project, he designed and manufactured the air frame and canopy for an first-person-view (FPV) racing drone by using FDM 3D printers and carbon fiber reinforced nylon 3D printing filament. His design and choice of new material resulted in an air frame that was 40% lighter than the OEM’s.
Boyan decided to stay at Carleton University and pursue his Master of Applied Science in Aerospace Engineering under the supervision of Professor Jeremy Laliberté. His research focus is on the design and manufacturing of bio-inspired flapping wings for micro drones (under 250 grams).
