All students participating the NSERC CREATE UTILI Program will be required to take part in internship placements hosted by one of our industrial or government collaborators. The duration of the internship is about 20% of the student’s program duration. Depending on the student’s program length:
- Master’s students spending two years in the program will be expected to complete approximately 12-16 weeks full-time or 24-32 weeks part-time;
- PhD students spending four years in the program will be expected to complete approximately 24-32 weeks full-time or 48-64 weeks part-time;
- otherwise, the internship duration will be prorated based on how long the student is funded by the NSERC CREATE UTILI program.
This webpage outlines the procedures that both students and collaborators need to follow to match students with internship hosts. These procedures ensure fairness, sustainability, and accountability for all parties involved.
The NSERC CREATE UTILI Program maintains a list of approved partners and collaborators and current graduate students that are published on the program website. This webpage will be used to start the matching process between students seeking internships and those wishing to host them. Below are the links to the industrial and government collaborator and student registration forms. Approved internship hosts can submit internship opportunities at any time. Graduate students in the program are encouraged to indicate their internship interests as soon as possible.

All internship opportunities and student registration details will be listed on the NSERC CREATE UTILI website. Internship positions will be posted in the graduate student portal, which can only be viewed by students and their thesis supervisors. Student CVs and details will be posted in the industrial and government collaborator portal, which can only be viewed by approved internship hosts and NSERC CREATE UTILI co-applicants. Below are password protected links to the industry/government collaborator and student portals. If you do not have the password for your associated link, please request one from the Program Coordinator.

Internship host and student information will remain posted until positions are matched and filled. The selection process conducted is as follows: 30 days after the project collaborator posts an opportunity, all interested students are listed and provided to our internship host. Students can choose up to three projects in order of preference and send those preferences to the Program Coordinator. Internship hosts can select up to three names from the list in order of preference and send those preferences to the Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator matches the student list of preference in order to connect students and collaborators. Only then are students and collaborators encouraged to connect with each other. If an agreement is reached, the internship position is taken off the list. If no agreement is reached, the next student on the list is connected to the host and so on.
Some of our partners and collaborators may have close ties with program participants and students, which would make it straightforward to arrange internships offline. However, the NSERC CREATE UTILI Program must ensure that students are equally available to every approved collaborator, and that students have a choice as well. Therefore, we encourage that all parties follow the procedures outline herein.
