Student Bio
Raphael Desbiens is a master’s student with a strong passion for mechatronics and automation. He possesses a diverse educational background, including a college diploma in engineering physics and a bachelor’s degree in automated manufacturing engineering. His college program introduced him to the fascinating fields of electronics and programming, which directed his interest towards robotics to maintain this spirit of versatility.
During his professional experience in co-op work-study programs, Raphael worked with companies of various sizes and areas of expertise. Among these professional projects, he was involved in the design of measurement systems, PCBs and robotic systems.
Among the numerous branches within the field of robotics, it was mobile robotics that hooked Raphael. He was particularly drawn to the embedded systems of these robots, which, due to their limited computational resources, demanded meticulous attention to the performance of the developed code.
Since September 2023, Raphael has embarked on a master’s program in automated manufacturing engineering at École de Technologie Supérieure (ÉTS) in Montreal. Under the supervision of Dr. David St-Onge at the INIT Robots laboratory, Raphael Desbiens collaborates with a team on a project related to localization and trajectory generation for the exploration of caves using micro aerial vehicles equipped with limited sensors.
