Sofia Strantzas

M.A.Sc. Candidate

Degrees:B.Eng. (Carleton)

Sofia is a M.A.Sc. candidate co-supervised by Dr. Stephanie Wright at Queen’s University. Sofia is studying the interactions between permafrost thaw and contaminants stored in drilling-mud sumps in the Arctic, which are used for the underground disposal of waste from exploratory oil drilling operations. This includes examining how salts and petroleum hydrocarbons affect permafrost thermal properties, how freeze-thaw cycles affect contaminant transport, and how future climate scenarios could affect existing sumps.
