Led by Dr. Elham Gharji, this study assesses the situation of higher education academic displacement caused by the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. In the last two decades, Afghanistan saw unprecedented changes in the higher education sector marked by expanding university networks and institutions, and the emergence of a new generation of internationally trained local scholars. Although Afghanistan has repeatedly experienced such displacements, in terms of size, impact and diversity, the recent exodus of intellectuals and knowledge communities from Afghanistan is probably the most significant in the modern history of the country. This study maps the displacement and whereabout of Afghanistan’s knowledge networks in exile with a view to identify pathways for local and international initiatives to reconnect, support and mobilize Afghanistan’s scholarly community in exile for future development of the country as well as to preserve knowledge and build intergenerational connections.
