Climate Commons
The Carleton Climate Commons Working Group brings together faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students at Carleton University to discuss issues surrounding the climate crisis in relation to the humanities and social sciences, to share academic work, ideas, and resources.
What we do: Conversation as Climate Action
The university has long been the place our society looks to for addressing issues of vital importance. The climate crisis is one of those issues. And yet in our increasingly specialized world, responses to the climate crisis are often perceived to come from science, technology, government, or some combination of the three. We believe the humanities and social sciences have a role to play here too. Climate Commons is a forum for exploring what that role might be.
Climate action begins long before policies are drafted or technologies are deployed. It begins with people talking, listening, questioning, imagining, and building understanding together. At Climate Commons, we believe conversation is not a passive activity, it is a form of climate action in its own right.
Conversation creates space for complexity. It allows us to confront uncertainty, challenge assumptions, and acknowledge the emotional, cultural, and social dimensions of climate change. It invites people who may feel excluded from traditional climate discourse to participate, contribute, and lead. Through dialogue, we build shared language, shared purpose, and shared responsibility.
Our work is grounded in the belief that moving forward in our climate changed world require trust, empathy, and the ability to imagine futures together. Conversation helps us cultivate these conditions. It helps us move from awareness to engagement, and from engagement to action.
