Dr. Fatih Birol officially launched the IEA’s World Energy Outlook 2012 in Canada at Carleton on November 26th, 2012. The annual WEO is the International Energy Agency’s flagship publication, widely recognized as the most credible, authoritative and unbiased source of strategic analysis of global energy trends, current issues and markets. WEO 2012 presents authoritative projections of energy trends through to 2035 and insights into what they mean for energy security, environmental sustainability and economic development. Oil, coal, natural gas, renewables and nuclear power are all covered, together with an update on climate change issues. Special strategic analyses will also cover energy efficiency, the Iraqi energy sector, the water-energy nexus, and energy poverty.

Dr. Fatih Birol has been named by Forbes Magazine among the most powerful people in terms of influence on the world’s energy scene. He is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s ‘High-level Group on Sustainable Energy for All’ and the Chairman of the World Economic Forum’s (Davos) Energy Advisory Board. A Turkish citizen, Dr. Birol worked at the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Vienna prior to joining the IEA in 1995.
