Overview

We live in an exciting time where new tools from engineering and molecular biology are allowing us to engineer biology and design proteins, cells and tissues with specific characteristics. In the Cell and Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Carleton, we take an interdisciplinary approach to characterize understand the fundamental origins of the mechanical properties of biopolymers, cells and tissues. To accomplish this goal we develop and build new mechanical testing tools, analysis methods and optical microscopy approaches, that allow us to operate at the length scale of single cells and tissues.

Research Interests

  1. Investigating the molecular determinants of cell and tissue mechanical properties

  2. Developing tools from engineering to study biology

  3. Reverse engineering protein, cell and tissue properties for regenerative medicine

  4. Engineering education
