Congratulations to Carleton professor Dr. Carol Payne (SSAC/ICSLAC) and Cultural Mediations Alumnae Drs. Annette de Stecher and Christina Williamson, whose publications received recognition from the Canadian Historical Association (CHA).
Drs. Carol Payne and Christina Williamson are the recipients of a CHA Clio Award (North) for their book Atiqput: Inuit Oral History and Project Naming, which they co-edited with Beth Greenhorn and Deborah Kigjugalik Webster. The CHA ‘S CLIO award recognizes “ the best books in regional history, as well as […] individuals or historical societies who have made significant contributions to local and regional history.” Published with McGill-Queen’s University Press, Atiqput offers “ a] multigenerational discussion of culture, history, and naming centring on archival photographs of Inuit whose names were previously unrecorded.”
Dr. Annette de Stecher, professor of Art History at the University of Colorado Boulder and 2013 Cultural Mediations Alumna, is the recipient of the CHA’s 2023 Indigenous History Book Prize for her monograph Wendat Women’s Arts, also published with McGill-Queen’s University Press. The prize is awarded annually by the Indigenous History Group, a committee affiliated with the Canadian Historical Association, to recognize the best book in aboriginal history. “ Breaking new ground in Indigenous art histories”, Wendat Women’s Arts offers “ [a] richly illustrated history of Wendat women’s embroidery traditions, from the eighteenth century to the present, interwoven with the stories of the artists.”
