Oren Petel has broad expertise relating to ballistic and impact characterization of protective materials and multiphase systems, including particle-infused polymers and liquid-solid systems. In recent years, he has focused his research on the investigation of biomechanics relating to injurious blast wave and impact events. His injury biomechanics research lab features an impactor and a high-speed x-ray cinematography capability that allows injury events to be resolved using x-ray images taken at extraordinary framing rates. Prof. Petel and his team are currently developing film sensors for integration into deformable human surrogates for use in helmet evaluation and concussion prevention. Prof. Petel was a special guest editor for a two-part thematic issue on Blast-Induced Traumatic Brain Injury that was published by Springer in the journal Shock Waves in late 2017 and early 2018.
