The Stand With Asians Coalition (SWAC), co-founded by Doris Wai Ki Mah, an alumna of the MPM class 2022, was featured in the first edition of Rooted: Chinese Canadian Stories in Burnaby. Chinese Canadians have been part of Burnaby for over a century, contributing significantly to the community in various sectors including business, technology, innovation, agriculture, arts and culture, education, and government. While it is crucial to acknowledge these many contributions, it is equally important to highlight the racism and discrimination they have faced historically and continue to experience today. The stories and photographs featured in this book serve as powerful reminders of the hardships endured by many Chinese Canadians, particularly during the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Rooted is now available at all Burnaby public libraries and 51 schools, making it an invaluable resource for residents of Burnaby to learn about the rich and complex history of Chinese Canadians in our city.
