To All Members of the Carleton Community,

I am pleased to inform faculty, staff and students that the Board of Governors has passed a motion to start formal negotiations on purchasing Dominion-Chalmers United Church. This decision has not been taken without a considerable amount of due diligence and thought. The purchase and renovation of the facility will be funded entirely by externally raised dollars and will not impact the capital budget of the university.

The decision will be formally announced in a media release that will be released shortly.

Carleton is eager to develop the new performance and concert space in an exciting community arts and culture hub downtown. The new centre will also include a recording studio and additional space for public lectures, events and exhibitions that is currently stretched to capacity on campus.

A dedicated web page about the project has been created to provide updates and content will be added as the project evolves.

Carleton’s administration will continue to work with the faculty, staff and students who are interested in using the new centre for teaching, research and community service. Any changes to academic programs and activities will be referred to Senate. In addition, the university will partner with community groups to expand our outreach activities and reinforce our commitment to community engagement.

On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the Carleton community, the Dominion-Chalmers United Church and the Ottawa arts community for their support of this exciting project.
Yours sincerely,

Alastair Summerlee
President and Vice-Chancellor
