Lexlixatkwa7 Nelson
Inherent Rights Youth Fellow
Lexlixatkwa7 Nelson is from Líl̓wat Nation in the St̓át̓imc Territory with Swiss ties on their matrilinial side.
Lexlixatkwa7 is close to finishing their Bachelors Degree in the First Nations and Endangered Languages Program at the University of British Columbia, based in Vancouver.
Having worked on First Voices through the Indigitization Program, Lexlixatkwa7 has grown a stronger passion for language and learning through stories and research. In this role, they learned about transcription, documentation and how to organize archival data. Through this job they were tasked with editing and uploading the traditional “Legends and Stories” audio files and illustrations onto the Stories section in First Voices Líl̓wat.
Lexlixatkwa7 completed an internship aimed towards supporting indigenous storytellers with their story ideas. This was with the animation company Relish Studios, where they were mentored by animators, storyboard artists and writers alike who helped with bringing their story ideas into a full Pitch Deck. In Lexlixatkwa7’s spare time they write stories with aspects of both Ucwalmicwts and English, with the hopes that more people will feel encouraged and motivated to learn the language of the Líl̓wat and St̓át̓imc peoples through reading.
Having been with the Inherent Rights Youth Initiative for a few years now, they are excited to be onboard as an Inherent Rights Youth Fellow with the Centre for First Nations Government
