Research Technologist – Full-time Contract
Job Description:
The SAM3 Innovation Hub at Carleton University and the Bruyère Hospital is engaged in advanced research on Supportive Smart Home systems to enable Aging in Place and Independence for older Canadians. Current projects include collaborations with small and large enterprises and government research scientists. The multidisciplinary team requires a full-time technologist to join our team. The role requires hands-on skills in electronic systems including design and implementation of prototype solutions using hardware/software. Work will range from concept/design to implementation, assembly, software development and verification. The candidate will be working with a team of senior Engineers, Engineering Professors, Research Assistants and external partners (Industry, Academia) and will be working with innovative sensor systems and their application.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Take designs from a conceptual stage through to proof of concept, assembly, and prototype
- Assist in the development of prototypes using microcontrollers and sensor-based technologies including their computer interfaces
- Evaluate new sensors and electronic systems
- Perform troubleshooting during the prototyping phase and report and resolve issues
- Create validation reports and conduct tests to ensure optimal system performance
- Work collaboratively with other team members
- Remain current of new technologies for microcontrollers and sensors and propose improvements in the design, performance, and reliability of the systems.
Opportunity: Hours will be negotiated but the candidate will work in the SAM3 labs at Carleton and Bruyère.
Job Requirements:
Qualifications:
- Electronics Technician or Technologist diploma
- Experience working with electronic instruments/equipment for industrial and/or scientific applications
- Hands-on experience implementing electronic circuits and interfaces
- Familiarity with operating principles, design, and integration of sensors
- Familiarity with programming languages for microcontrollers and device drivers
- Previous experience and/or exposure to sensor-based technologies
- Critical thinking skills and strong ability to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
- Commitment to high quality
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a multidisciplinary team
- Attention to details and good organization skills
- Familiarity with computer setup and maintenance
- Positive and constructive attitude and good communication skills
- Self-motivation with strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English
