Sustainable Energy Seminar Series
Speaker: Benoit Gervais
Pressured by society and capital markets, high-emission industries such as the energy sector have been pushed to reduce capital spending over the past 10 years. The threat of substitution and potential environmental taxes forced shareholders and corporations to accept a future without growth. For many, the promise of a clean, affordable and abundant energy future seemed possible. Today, energy shortages are emerging, making basic needs such as heating unaffordable. Populations are forced to make the difficult choice to either cut back consumption or return to using more gray energy. Where did we go wrong? Where to from here? Capital markets and government policies need a fresh approach.
Benoit Gervais is a Senior Vice-President Investments, and team lead for the Resource Team. Benoit Gervais joined Mackenzie Investments in 2001 after completing a Masters in Mineral Economics at the Colorado School of Mines and a Bachelor of Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique. Mackenzie Investments is one of the largest money managers in Canada with 200B$ of assets under management. The Mackenzie Resources team oversees about 5 B$ in assets invested in oil, gas, power, steel, mining, chemicals, forestry and agriculture.
