Paul Mkandawire is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Studies at Carleton University. His research focuses on the health impacts of environmental dispossession among Aboriginal peoples. Conditions that constitute social determinants of health among Aboriginal people in Canada are fundamentally different from those that apply to the general population. Stable and secure access to land and the social, political, economic, and cultural resources that come with it are vital for the health and well-being of the Aboriginal peoples. Continuing loss of access to traditional land, first through colonization and then more recently through chemical contamination, is at the centre of poor health status of Aboriginal peoples in Canada.
