Author of “The early history of Carleton football”

Joe Scanlon is Professor Emeritus and Director of Carleton’s Emergency Communications Research Unit (ECRU) which means he studies disasters. Over the years he has been involved in many ways with Carleton athletics — as manager of the men’s basketball team, as student assistant to Norm Fenn when Norm was Director of Athletics, as associate coach of the men’s Junior Varsity basketball team, as tennis coach (four championship teams in his five years as coach), as counsellor to Varsity athletes, and as member of the Athletics Board. Along with a second year Journalism class, he wrote the early history of Carleton football and — with university funding — wrote a history of Carleton men’s basketball. He now writes a monthly column on Carleton sports for the Ottawa South community newspaper, OSCAR.

Update: May 2015
Joe died on Saturday May 2, 2015. As a teacher, researcher and former director of the Carleton University School of Journalism, he had a profound and enduring influence on countless journalism students, faculty members, instructors and staff.
