Accessibility in Higher Education
This interactive workshop will introduce the topics of disabilities and accessibility in the university environment in general, and specific to Carleton University. We will explore the Why, What, and How in the context of student services, from relevant policies and trends at Carleton, to disability related accommodations and universal design in higher education.
Please note this workshop is paused for the winter 2024 term.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this workshop, faculty and staff will be able to:
- Appreciate recent trends and developments in accessibility and higher education
- Identify a number of barriers to learning and working faced by students and staff
- Make a distinction between accommodations and accessibility
- Understand the basic principles of Universal Design in higher education
- Evaluate opportunities to consider accessibility in their work and environments
- Gain insight into disability and accessibility-related experiences as presented by Carleton students and faculty
What to expect at the session
Session length: 1.5 hours
This workshop may include the following activities:
- Periods of sitting
- Listening to a facilitator
- Discussion and interaction with colleagues
- Viewing a multimedia presentation
- Viewing videos (with closed captions)
