Stigma, Substances and Supporting Students 101: An Educators Guide to Supporting Students is an online resource on mental health and addiction, and eliminating the stigma associated with themIt is intended for faculty and staff of Canadian post-secondary institutions. Developed through a partnership among the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, Algonquin College, Carleton University and the University of Ottawathe video includes four modules featuring experts and those with lived experience of substance use from a variety of organizations, such as the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and Ottawa Public Health.  

This session is an asynchronous BrightSpace workshop. You can complete the workshop at any time by enrolling in the Stigma, Substances and Supporting Students 101: An Educators Guide to Supporting Students course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, faculty and staff will be able to:

  • Describe the differences between mental health and mental illness;
  • Identify the spectrum of substance use as it relates to students
  • Utilize person first language to reduce the impact of stigma;
  • Recognize the importance of a harm-reduction approach;
  • List resources specific to their community

What to expect at the session

This workshop is an asynchronous course available through BrightSpace.

Session length: ~90 minutes

This workshop may include the following activities:

  • Participation in a self-directed BrightSpace course
  • Watching videos (close captioning and transcripts available)
  • Completing pre-assessment and post-assessment surveys
  • Completing a BrightSpace assessment at the end of the workshop
