Transgender Media Portal Research Assistants

  • Remote work from home (with option to work on-campus starting in January)
  • Salary: $24.27/hour
  • 150 hours total (6-7 hours per week during the academic semester)

The Transgender Media Portal (TMP) is a website and database that aims to make audiovisual work by trans, Two Spirit, nonbinary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people more available to artists, activists, researchers, instructors, and the public. In this position, you would help Carleton professor Laura Horak (Film Studies) and her research team build the TMP and investigate trans cinema history.

Trans, queer, Black, and Indigenous candidates and candidates of colour are especially encouraged to apply.

These two positions could be filled by students in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences / Faculty of Public Affairs or by students in the Faculty of Engineering and Design / Faculty of Science. The roles and responsibilities for these positions will be tailored to fit  the successful candidate’s skills and experiences.

Students from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences or Public Affairs

Possible Responsibilities:

  • Research trans film festival programs, films, and filmmakers online
  • Enter information about trans-made films into the Transgender Media Portal
  • Test and evaluate the database tool
  • Present the project at the annual Ottawa-Carleton School District Annual Rainbow Forum
  • Interview trans filmmakers and festival programmers
  • Help organize a public screening event at a local high school
  • Coordinate the TMP’s social media presence (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and email list)
  • Research transgender digital security and privacy concerns
  • Contribute to requirements and policy recommendations
  • Write blog entries about your work on the TMP for the project website
  • Present the project at the year-end I-CUREUS symposium

Previous skills and experience:

  • Research, writing, clear communication, good time management, organized, independent worker
  • Previous experience with trans art and activism a plus

Students from the Faculty of Engineering and Design or Science

Possible Responsibilities:

  • Help design, implement, and test the Transgender Media Portal in collaboration with the project’s lead developer
  • Help draft project requirements and specifications
  • Help design data entry and vetting workflow
  • Enter information about trans-made films into the Transgender Media Portal
  • Write blog entries about your work on the TMP for the project website
  • Present the project at the year-end I-CUREUS symposium

Previous skills and experience:

  • Any of the following: Frontend design, CSS, Python, data cleaning, user experience design, graphic design, database design, experience with content management systems
  • Clear communication, good time management, organized, independent worker
  • Previous experience with trans art and activism a plus
