Admission to the collaborative master’s program in African Studies is available to master’s students who are admitted in one of the participating master’s programs. To apply to one of the participating master’s programs, please visit the Graduate Admissions website.

Admission to the collaborative master’s program in African Studies is determined by the Institute of African Studies Graduate Committee.

Admission Requirements

  • honours bachelor degree or equivalent
  • completion of the African Studies Specialization Form
  • be admitted to and maintain current registration in one of the participating master’s program

Required Documents

After you have submitted your online application and your application fee has been processed for your application to the participating master’s program, you will be instructed on how to upload your required documents in Carleton Central. For complete information regarding required documents, please visit the Graduate Admissions website.

If you are interested in being considered for the collaborative master’s program in African Studies, you must complete the African Studies Specialization Form which is available under Supplementary Forms section of your online application.

Note: For students applying to the MA: International Affairs program who are also interested in the collaborative master’s program in African Studies, please see specific information below.

Application Deadlines

Fall Term (September):

  • You must follow the application deadline of the participating master’s program to which you are applying.
  • Note: Students applying to the MA: International Affairs program must submit an application to the Institute of African Studies by August 1.

How to Apply

Students wishing to apply to the collaborative master’s program in African Studies (except those applying to the MA: International Affairs program, see below) must complete the African Studies Specialization Form as described above and upload it as part of your Required Documents. This form, which requires you to indicate the reasons for your interest in this collaboration, must be uploaded by the application deadline of the participating master’s program.

The application process to graduate studies at Carleton for all prospective students is the same and must be completed online. For complete information regarding the application process please visit the Graduate Admissions website.

Late admissions are permissible, if there is room in the collaborative program in African Studies. Students already accepted into a participating master’s program at Carleton who are also interested in the collaborative master’s program in African Studies are welcome to contact the Institute of African Studies to discuss the possibility of applying and the process of doing so.

Admission Decisions

If you are admitted to the collaborative master’s program in African Studies, you will be notified at the time you receive  an offer of admission to the participating master’s program. Students applying to the MA: International Affairs program will be notified at a later date. You can check your application status in Carleton Central.

MA: International Affairs Applicants

For those applying to the MA: International Affairs program at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA), NPSIA will email admitted students to request that those interested in being part of the collaborative master’s program in African Studies submit an application (a form will be supplied) to the Institute of African Studies by August 1.
